The homeowner wanted to replace the worn and dated cabinetry around his fireplace with something that could accommodate a flat-screen TV and some accompanying electronic equipment. The left-side bank of cabinets was deepened, by borrowing space from an adjacent closet. Cable chases were created, some connection cables were put in place, and new power outlets were added.
Custom cabinets were built to maximize the usable space. Below the mantle, deeper units allow plenty of room for audio and video receivers, as well as large books. Above the
mantle, shallower units provide space for books. Adjustable shelves throughout allow for flexibility. They're made of Birch-veneer plywood (domestically produced), with solid poplar face-frames. a shallow tray ceiling extends out a few feet from the casework, and includes 3 recessed lighting cans to light the wall.
